Chicago Bears general manager Ryan Pace and his management team have been working hard trying to clear up some cap space for free agency and to keep some current players. The most important names that people want to see stick around are Adrian Amos and Bryce Callahan. Ideally everybody would like to keep both but the cap might not make it possible, Pace will try though. «I wouldn't say it's either/or, and there's ongoing discussions,» Pace said Wednesday at the NFL scouting combine.
If it comes down to it, it sounds like Callahan might be the guy they keep around. Callahan's injury history might be able to let the Bears sign him cheap even with his great productivity. "That's part of the task and challenge that we have," Pace said. "I think there are so many things that factor into a player's contract"Those are all factors in Bryce's contract and we're working through that."Head coach Matt Nagy also spoke very highly of Callahan and his uniqueness. "It's such an important position with so much being played right now and these four-down fronts," coach Matt Nagy said. "You've got to be able to have a guy that can play in that slot, that can cover a wide receiver that's a good route runner, that can do things underneath. But he's got to be a tackler coming off the edge to be able to blitz and make different tackles"The market is going up for those type of guys. It's a hybrid position. When there's not a lot, the supply and demand drives that up. It will be interesting to see how that goes."Add to the fact there's been lots of speculation that Amos will join Vic Fangio in Denver, it really seems the decision has been made.
