Ian Rapoport reported that the Detroit Lions have signed RB David Montgomery to a 3 year deal, worth $18, including $11 million guaranteed.

Montgomery, who the Bears selected in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft, has shown great promise in his two seasons with the team. In 2020, he rushed for 1,070 yards and eight touchdowns while also contributing 54 receptions for 438 yards and two touchdowns as a receiver. He has proven to be a versatile player with the ability to make an impact in both the rushing and passing game.
For the Lions, Montgomery's addition to the roster is a much-needed boost to their running game. This also means that Montgomery will likely split the backfield touches with De'Andre Swift as Jamaal Williams will be on a different team next season.
In January, Bears general manager Ryan Poles expressed his desire to keep Montgomery on the team. However, it appears that the negotiations for a contract extension were not successful, leading to Montgomery's departure. As a result, the Bears will now have to face Montgomery twice a year as he joins a divisional rival team.
David Montgomery's career in Chicago has been short but impressive thus far. The Bears drafted him in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft, and he quickly made an impact in his rookie season. Montgomery played in all 16 games, starting in seven of them, and rushed for 889 yards and six touchdowns. He also added 25 receptions for 185 yards and a touchdown.
In his second season with the team, Montgomery took another step forward. He started all 15 games he played in, missing one due to injury, and rushed for 1,070 yards and eight touchdowns. He also showed his versatility as a receiver, catching 54 passes for 438 yards and two touchdowns.
Montgomery's 2020 season was particularly impressive given the struggles of the Bears' offense as a whole. The team ranked 22nd in the league in total offense, but Montgomery was a consistent bright spot. He rushed for over 100 yards in four of the team's last six games, helping them to win three of those games and secure a playoff berth.
What makes Montgomery such an exciting player to watch is his combination of power and agility. He is a tough runner who can break tackles and push through contact, but he also has the speed and quickness to make defenders miss in the open field. He is also a reliable receiver out of the backfield, making him a valuable asset in both the rushing and passing game.
