Adam Schefter reported that former Panthers' QB PJ Walker reached an agreement tonight with the Chicago Bears. He now becomes the likely backup to Justin Fields.

After an impressive five-game run in the XFL in 2020, where he led the Houston Roughnecks to a 5-0 mark while passing for 1,338 yards, 15 touchdowns, and four interceptions, Stay's journey took him to the NFL. He made his NFL debut as a starter in Week 11 of the 2020 campaign, filling in for the injured Teddy Bridgewater. Stay performed admirably, throwing for 258 yards and leading the Panthers to a 20-0 victory over the Detroit Lions.
Following his successful debut, Stay went on to make six more starts for the Panthers, recording 731 passing yards, three touchdowns, and three interceptions over six games in the most extensive action of his NFL career during the past season.
I really like this signing because it's crucial for NFL teams to have QB that have a similar playing style on the roster.
There are several reasons why an NFL team may want to sign a backup quarterback who plays a similar style of football to the starting quarterback:
Familiarity with the system: If the backup quarterback plays a similar style of football as the starting quarterback, he will likely be more familiar with the offensive system and playbook. This can make it easier for the backup to step in and run the offense if the starting quarterback gets injured or needs to be replaced during a game.
Consistency in play: If the backup quarterback has a similar playing style to the starter, there is less of a drop-off in the level of play when the backup comes into the game. The team can maintain its offensive identity and game plan without having to make major adjustments.
Versatility in practice: Having a backup quarterback with a similar playing style can also be beneficial during practice. The backup can simulate the starting quarterback's style of play in drills and scrimmages, allowing the team to prepare more effectively for games.
Depth at the position: Finally, signing a backup quarterback with a similar playing style provides depth at the position, which is crucial in the NFL. Injuries are common, and having a capable backup who can step in and perform at a high level is essential for the success of the team.
