Bears' Positional Battles to Watch Ahead of the 2024 NFL Season

The Chicago Bears have a few key positional battles to resolve as they prepare for the 2024 NFL season. Under the guidance of general manager Ryan Poles, the Bears have built a strong roster, setting the stage for star quarterback prospect Caleb Williams to thrive. While Williams will undoubtedly attract most of the attention, determining the starters for these crucial positions will be essential in rounding out the team.

Kick and Punt Returner

The competition for the kick and punt returner position involves Velus Jones Jr., Dante Pettis, and Tyler Scott. Jones has held the role for the past two seasons but has struggled with fumbles and mistakes. Pettis has shown promise with an average of over seven yards per return in two NFL seasons but has been plagued by injuries. Scott, who showcased potential last season, might find his best opportunity in the return game given the presence of D.J. Moore, Keenan Allen, and Rome Odunze at wide receiver. This battle will be crucial as special teams play a significant role in game outcomes.

Resolving these positional battles will be essential for the Bears to field a well-rounded and competitive team in the 2024 NFL season.

Defensive End Opposite Montez Sweat

Chicago needs to decide who will start opposite Montez Sweat on the defensive line. The competition features veteran DeMarcus Walker and rookie Austin Booker. Walker, who recorded 3.5 sacks in 2023, brings experience to the table. In contrast, Booker, fresh from a collegiate career with 13 tackles for loss and eight sacks, represents fresh talent and potential. The outcome of this veteran-versus-rookie battle will be critical in ensuring that Sweat doesn't face constant double teams from opponents.

Center

The Bears' center position features a three-way competition among Coleman Shelton, Ryan Bates, and Doug Kramer. Shelton, who had a solid 2023 season with the Los Angeles Rams, appears to be the frontrunner. His experience and performance give him an edge, though Bates and Kramer will certainly vie for the starting role. Bates, another free agent acquisition, could still find a roster spot even if he doesn't secure the starting job, depending on his performance in training camp.
