Post Draft Free Agents based on needs for the Bears

The Bears have filled a lot of depth issues, just like GM Ryan Poles stated he would. Between the draft and signing undrafted free agents, the Bears are now at 74 players on the roster. But we can always add more! Our team is extremely young. This is great from a growth standpoint, the ceiling is high for where we can be in years to come. But in order to get there, the young guys need some guidance. A crafty vet sitting in the room with these younger guys is nothing but beneficial. There is a reason players retire and become coaches. They have been in the game so long that everything is second nature.

The Bears are sitting just over $15 million in cap space prior to signing the new draftees. Poles can make room by cutting some of the dead weight that will be practice squad guys and not a 53-man roster lock. So here is a look at the top free agents, by position, that the Bears should look into signing in order to help the team grow, without breaking the bank.

QB
We're good here. Justin Fields is our number 1 and the recent signing of Trevor Siemian to help him is the exact purpose of this article.

RB
Monty is our starter, without a doubt. He's a workhorse. Herbert is a change of pace guy but a 3rd down vet wouldn't be a complete waste of money.

We have young talent but Mooney needs someone to pull away double coverage each pass play.

The last thing we need to do is follow the traditional sign every tight end in free agency with a heartbeat! Kmet is our go-to, we dropped Graham and picked up O'Shaughnessy.

Cody Whitehair and Patrick Lucas look to be locked in for the interior with possibly Dakota Dozier as the other guard. Tevin Jenkins and Larry Borum are the current tackles. With Jenkins' injuries, he barely played last season, and Borum isn't a shoo-in despite starting most of last season. The draft has seen the Bears loading up on late-round project players so more veterans would be nothing but helpful.

Switching to a 4-3 has more change than one would think. Quinn will do fine with his hand in the dirt with, likely, fewer double teams. Everyone else is young. We signed Muhammad and Justin Jones but I'd like to see more experience.

Roquan would make a great will or sam backer if we could find someone to trust shutting it down the middle. Right now Khalil Mack's little brother, Ledarius, looks to get his first start as a backer along with recently signed Nick Morrow. A very young group with little experience with an NFL 4-3.

Jaylon Johnson and Eddie Jackson return as starters and new additions Brisker and Gordon look to contribute right away but I would really like to see any of these vets get signed to solidify the room.

New punter, Ryan Winslow, is on his fourth team in four years, not always a great sign and the Bears did draft Trenton Gill. On the other side, Cairo Santos is settling in as a dependable kicker. If the Bears bring in some competition for camp it will have to be some young hopefuls all of the big named, younger/middle-aged, specialists have been picked up.
