"Devin Hester retired on Thursday and right away it brought up memories of the incredible return to start Super Bowl XLI between the Indianapolis Colts and Chicago Bears.
With the retirement announcement, some people dug up a video of former Colts coach, Tony Dungy appearing on «The Dan Patrick Show» in 2015, and Dungy told a hilarious story about that play.
Patrick had asked Dungy to act out his pregame speech to the team that day and Dungy got straight to the point.
The speech of course included all the cliches — honor, togetherness and fight. But the coach also stated that at some time during the game, they would encounter «a storm,» and the team will be forced to come together if they want to get by it.
«We had decided all week that we were not going to kick the ball to Devin Hester. That night after the meeting, I thought that [not kicking to him] was playing scared. So, the next morning as we're going to the game, I told the team I hope we lose the toss because if we do, we're going to kick it right down the middle to Hester. We're going to pound him. Then, they know we've taken their best threat. They're going to be finished.»
So that's exactly what they tried to do.
«Thirteen seconds later he was in the end zone,» Dungy said. «Everybody is looking at me saying, ‘who's that?' I went back and said to them, ‘I told you we'd have a storm.»'
The Colts would go on to win the game 29-17.
