Probable extension in store for Cole Kmet this offseason
With the conclusion of the Super Bowl, the NFL offseason has begun for all 32 teams, with free agency opening up next month and the 2023 NFL Draft scheduled a little over two months away. Amidst the excitement of what is to come, the possibility of a Cole Kmet contract extension looms close to home.
The 23-year-old tight end has become eligible for a contract extension following the end of the 2022 season, and in recent days, Kmet has expressed his desire to stay in Chicago beyond his rookie contract. In an interview with the FOX Chicago kickoff team, Kmet stated his love for playing for his childhood team, while also mentioning on a Windy City Gridiron podcast with Bill Zimmerman that he would love to remain in Chicago. Kmet added that he will be working with his agent soon to plan out the offseason. Although a Kmet extension may not be imminent, there is interest from one side to negotiate a deal.
Kmet had an impressive year, catching 50 passes for 544 yards and seven touchdowns. He has also shown improvement every year and has set a strong baseline for what he can accomplish on a yearly basis. Additionally, he is still only 23 and has plenty of room to grow, given that he will not turn 24 until next month. These factors could lead to the mutual interest in a contract extension between Kmet and the Chicago Bears.
