Todd Archer of ESPN.com reports that the Cowboys have added tackle Jason Peters to the practice squad.

Peters started 15 games last year for the Chicago Bears and is entering his 18th season. He spent the majority of his career (11 years) with the NFC East rival Philadelphia Eagles.

«This allows Peters, 40, to ease into work after not going to a training camp,» Archer tweeted.

It also allows the Cowboys to avoid owing Peters his full salary for 2022, under the concept of termination pay. If he were on the Week One active roster and if the team decided things weren't working out, he would have been entitled to his full salary if he'd been released. (The Cowboys can still elevate him for Week One, without guaranteeing his full salary.)

The move comes after the Cowboys lost eight-time Pro Bowl left tackle Tyron Smith until at least December because of a hamstring that tore off the bone and required surgery. The addition of Peters at least gives them insurance should first-round pick Tyler Smith struggle at left tackle.
