The continued struggles of the Chicago Bears' offense in Justin Fields' third season and Luke Getsy's second year as offensive coordinator raise questions. Former NFL quarterback and football coach Shaun King has a unique perspective on this matter, suggesting that Getsy's lack of improvement as a play-caller might stem from his sideline vantage point.

Throughout his two years in Chicago, Getsy has called plays from the sidelines, which has not resulted in significant improvements. King speculates that Getsy's desire to be a future head coach might be influencing his choice to remain on the sideline. According to King, coordinators often believe that staying on the sideline enhances their image as potential head coaching candidates. King shared a personal experience from his time at USF, where a coordinator refused to move to the booth despite struggling to see the game from the sideline due to aspirations of becoming a head coach.

While it's too late to determine how different things would be if Getsy had chosen to call plays from the booth, this perspective sheds light on his tenure with the Bears. Getsy frequently emphasizes the need for better execution as the primary issue plaguing the Bears' offense, a sentiment echoed by head coach Matt Eberflus. However, this challenging stint as the Bears' offensive coordinator may have hindered Getsy's potential ascent to a head coaching position had he successfully elevated Fields and the Bears' offense.

It's important to note that the Bears' offensive struggles cannot be solely attributed to Getsy. The team lacks elite offensive talent, and injuries and offensive line shuffling have posed challenges. Additionally, Fields has had his share of missed opportunities and turnovers. While Getsy excels in game-planning and designing opening scripts, he struggles to maintain that success throughout the entire game, a problem that a booth perspective might alleviate.

The Bears' difficulties in short-yardage situations and their attempts to change Fields' playing style as a second-year player further raise concerns about Getsy's coaching approach.

Regardless of what happens with Eberflus and Fields in the future, it appears that Getsy's time in Chicago may be coming to an end. Unfortunately for him, achieving his goal of becoming a head coach may require taking a step back in his coaching career.
