Caleb Discusses His Surprising Reaction to Justin Fields' Trade

Caleb Williams and the Chicago Bears have been aligning paths since the early stages of the pre-draft evaluations.

The Bears, keen on Williams, had prioritized him at the 2024 NFL Scouting Combine, planning to gather crucial medical data during a top-30 visit after the event. This was part of their broader strategy to transition away from quarterback Justin Fields.

Delays shifted Williams' visit to early April. Nevertheless, Bears general manager Ryan Poles was eager to offer Fields a new beginning elsewhere to pave the way for Williams. On March 16, just days before Williams' pro day and weeks before his planned visit, Poles executed a trade sending Fields to the Pittsburgh Steelers for a conditional 2025 sixth-round pick.

Caught off guard by the trade's timing, Williams was made aware of the Bears' firm intention to draft him first overall in 2024.


«I was just driving to a meeting, enjoying some music, when suddenly my phone started blowing up,» Williams shared on "The Pivot." "From a few texts to an avalanche of notifications—it was quite the surprise, especially since my top-30 visit hadn't happened and they didn't have my medical details yet."

The Bears further solidified their commitment to Williams during a two-day visit in Los Angeles and a dinner at Halas Hall, emphasizing the importance of personal fit within the team. Poles praised Williams' leadership and the deep respect he commands from teammates and staff alike, evident from their interactions during the pre-draft process.

«He doesn't just drive fancy cars or live in luxury; he makes a point of including his teammates in his life,» Poles noted to NBC Sports Chicago. "It's impressive how he manages his NIL obligations while fostering team unity."
