This secret NFL rule is so bizarre and rarely happens!
The NFL has so many rules that it becomes had to keep track of them all. Most die-hard NFL fans pride themselves on knowing almost all of them. However, a rule that I'm sure a very big majority of the fans don't know is the "fair-catch kick rule"
Here is an explanation:
After a fair catch, an NFL team has the right to take a free-kick from the line of scrimmage on the next play. If the kick goes through the uprights, the kicking team scores 3 points. It is also known as a «free kick field goal.
Here are the conditions of the situation:
1. There is no snap.
2. The defense must stand at least 10 yards from the line of scrimmage until the ball is kicked.
3. The kicking team may not use a tee. The ball must be placed or drop-kicked.
4. Even if time expired on the preceding play, the fair-catching team may still attempt the kick.
This rule only occurred twice since 2013. Here is a video of the last time it happened in a matchup between the Panthers and the Bucs:
Here is an explanation of the rule by NFL rule analyst Dean Blandino:
