This Bears veteran had to step up if he wanted to be back in 2023... and he didn't
With the season over, we can now start to look back and evaluate some of the players' level of play. Justin Fields has excelled in some areas and slipped in others, same with the Oline and receivers. Well, let's take a look at this Bears players that needed to step it up... but did not.
Cody Whitehair
Cody is a mixed bag; he's been solid for us when he's been healthy. He hasn't been a superstar, but he's not bad, either. Although he's never been terrible, he's also never exceeded expectations. That kind of stagnancy might not be tolerated, as the front office wants to see progress.
Only Eddie Jackson is set to make more next year. Whitehair is a potential salary cap casualty in 2023. Slotted to earn $14.1 million in 2023 and another $13.25 million in 2024, Cody Whitehair is replaceable. It's even possible the Bears can upgrade the position and still pay less. The Bears would be set to save between $5-$10 million next year, depending on when they release him if they do.
