With the New York Jets signing Sam Darnold on Monday, Chicago Bears rookie, Roquan Smith, is now the only 2018 first round pick who's unsigned. Head coach Matt Nagy recently explained that the new helmet rule was the main reason why no contract had been signed yet. "(The helmet rule) is part of the issue with it," Nagy said of the contract impasse, according to the Chicago Tribune's Colleen Kane and Rich Campbell. "As far as the details, I'm not going to get into all of that right now. That wouldn't be fair to either party, but there's some of that to it."
After Nagy chimed in on the weekend, it was general manager Ryan Pace's turn. «That's obviously a big topic right now,» the GM said during a guest appearance on WMVP-AM 1000. «And for us, these are important and critical reps that are going on right now. But to get into the nitty gritty details isn't something we feel we should do publicly. That's behind the scenes. We have a lot of respect for him obviously and a lot of respect for his agents. And it's a matter of just working through that.»
If/when the two sides can finally put a contract together, Pace is fully confident that Smith won't need much time to get up to date.«We drafted him for a lot of reasons,» he said. «But one of the reasons was his football makeup and his football intelligence. Which is really off the charts. So he's a guy who picks things up quickly.»
What do you think of Pace's comments?
