Pro Football Focus' expert Brad Spielberger stopped on the Bears Banter Podcast to talk about the Bears roster. One of the most intriguing things he mentioned is a potential David Montgomery contract extension.

Here is a quote from the podcast: «We know he is a great locker room guy. He would eat glass if Ryan Poles asked him to eat glass. All those things, when you are trying to establish a culture, and trying to get a locker room to buy in, those reasons and rationales aren't always smart, but I really do, I think he's going to get extended. I think it'll fall in the 10 to 12 million per year range, maybe even more frankly. How it ages? Probably won't be great but I do think that is a strong possibility.»

First of all, let me preface this by saying I love David Montgomery. I think he is an amazing football player and an even better leader. There are no bad things to say about him. However, giving a long-term contract to a running back is not always a great move. I know that he will only be 25 years-old next season. But, for a running back, 25 is not that young. We have seen multiple examples of running back in the league getting a big extension around that age and then having injuries or simply regressing. The best examples are Ezekiel Elliott in Dallas, Christian McCaffrey in Carolina or Todd Gurley back with the Rams.

Anyways, Montgomery will be a huge part of the future of the Bears offense. I just think you need to be careful with the length and the guarantees of the potential extension coming soon...
