Los Angeles Chargers' Pro Bowl running back, Austin Ekeler, has requested permission to speak with other teams regarding a potential trade, according to his agent Cameron Weiss. This comes after extension talks between the Chargers and Ekeler did not progress. The running back is set to make approximately $6 million for the 2023 season and is in line to become an unrestricted free agent in 2024.
Ekeler, who led the NFL in receptions by a running back in 2022 with 107 catches, has been a key player for the Chargers alongside quarterback Justin Herbert. However, with concerns about his health and the Chargers' recent restructuring of Keenan Allen's deal, Ekeler's value may be undervalued.
Many believe that retaining Ekeler is crucial for the development and success of Herbert, who has shown a strong connection with the running back on the field. As such, fans and analysts are urging the Chargers to pay Ekeler his due and keep him on the team.
As Ekeler explores his options, it remains to be seen if the Chargers will be able to retain one of their star players.
