The Denver Broncos made headlines on Wednesday with their unexpected decision to release quarterback Ben DiNucci, previously with the Dallas Cowboys.

Last year, DiNucci gained attention for his performance in the UFL and subsequently joined the Broncos' practice squad for the 2023 NFL season. Despite being the third quarterback behind Zach Wilson and Jarrett Stidham, the recent drafting of Bo Nix from Oregon prompted the Broncos to reassess their lineup.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported the release, noting the strategic changes following the acquisition of Zach Wilson and the draft pick of Bo Nix.

DiNucci himself confirmed the news via social media. "I have been released by the Broncos," he posted. "All part of the journey!! Excited for what's to come."

During the previous preseason, DiNucci showcased his skills in a commanding 41-0 victory over the Los Angeles Rams, where he completed 11 of 15 passes for 117 yards and a touchdown. Despite this performance, he was later waived during the final roster cuts but was picked up again for the practice squad.

The Broncos might consider bringing DiNucci back to their practice squad if he does not secure a position on another active roster.

Ben DiNucci's history with the Cowboys, who drafted him in the seventh round in 2020, included a challenging debut season where he stepped in due to injuries to Dak Prescott and Andy Dalton. After a tough game against the Philadelphia Eagles, where DiNucci completed 23 of 43 passes for 219 yards without a touchdown, he was released in the 2022 offseason.

There has been speculation about a possible return to Dallas following his tenure with the Broncos, especially since the Cowboys were rumored to be considering additional quarterbacks. However, they ended the draft without selecting a quarterback, leaving Cooper Rush and Trey Lance as backups to Prescott.
