The Chicago Bears are fortifying their pass rush for the upcoming 2024 season by securing veteran defensive end Jacob Martin on a one-year contract.

Martin, a 28-year-old pass-rushing specialist, brings with him a tally of 18 career sacks, despite primarily serving as a rotational player throughout his six-season tenure. In 2021, he started 14 games for the Houston Texans, achieving career highs in various defensive categories, including sacks, tackles for loss, total tackles, forced fumbles, and pass deflections.

While Martin served as a backup for the Indianapolis Colts, he arrives at the Bears with significant career statistics, including 85 tackles, 18 tackles for loss, and seven forced fumbles. The Bears officially announced Martin's signing on Saturday, March 16.

Although Martin joins as a depth addition, he could emerge as a vital component of the rotation in 2024, depending on the team's strategy for bolstering its defensive line. With Montez Sweat leading the pass rush, the Bears might draft a high-end rookie to complement him in the upcoming NFL draft. Martin is expected to vie for playing time alongside DeMarcus Walker and Dominique Robinson during training camp.

This signing marks the Bears' first move for their defensive line among the nine free agents signed since the start of the 2024 league year on March 13.

Additionally, the Bears' recent acquisition of six-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Keenan Allen suggests a potential shift in draft priorities. With a formidable receiver duo comprising Allen and DJ Moore, the Bears might divert their focus from targeting top receivers in the 2024 draft class with their ninth overall pick. Instead, they could prioritize selecting one of the top pass rushers available to pair with Sweat.

Prospects like Alabama's Dallas Turner, Florida State's Jared Verse, and UCLA's Laiatu Latu offer enticing options for bolstering the Bears' pass rush. Moreover, the Bears could explore the possibility of trading down from their ninth overall pick to acquire additional draft capital while still securing a high-quality edge rusher.

In light of their limited draft picks, the Bears must carefully assess their options to maximize their chances of landing impactful players to strengthen their roster for the upcoming season.
