The Bears have signed the best available free agent!
It was reported yesterday that the Las Vegas Raiders waived Alex Leatherwood, the No. 17 overall pick of the 2021 NFL draft, on Tuesday, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
However, he did not have to wait very long to be scooped up. And you guessed it, it was by nonother than GM Ryan Poles. Indeed, Ian Rappoport reported that the Bears signed Leatherwood.
The Bears will inherit Alex Leatherwood's contract, which has 3 years left and $5.9M left that is fully guaranteed, plus they have the right to the fifth-year option. Las Vegas already paid 58.9% of it.
I know Leatherwood was terrible last season, but he is still one of the most talented linemen the Bears could get their hands on. While he played badly for many games, he did show some flashes of why he was selected in the first round of the 2021 NFL draft. It will be interesting to see if he is able to see some playing time with the Bears, but I really like the upside he could have.
