Damar Hamlin Urges Lawmakers on Capitol Hill to Provide Extra AEDs in Schools
Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin made a visit to Capitol Hill on Wednesday to advocate for an essential cause. He appealed to lawmakers to increase the number of automated external defibrillators (AEDs) in schools nationwide, only a few months after suffering a cardiac arrest during a Monday Night Football game that nearly cost him his life.
Hamlin urged politicians to support The Access to AEDs Act, a bill that aims to make defibrillation more accessible to students in primary and secondary schools. This cause has become a priority for Hamlin since his on-field collapse in January. The Buffalo Bills player's advocacy highlights the critical role that AEDs can play in saving lives during medical emergencies.
"Sudden cardiac arrest happens to more than 7,000 kids under the age of 18 every year in our country," Hamlin said. "The majority of the kids impacted are student athletes. Research shows that 1 in every 300 youth has an undetected heart condition that puts them at risk."
"For schools that have AEDs, the survival rate for the children from sudden cardiac arrest is seven times higher. The Access to AEDs Act will help ensure that schools are just as prepared and trained to respond in a time of crisis as those on the sideline of an NFL game."

Following his own cardiac emergency earlier this year, Damar Hamlin has emerged as a prominent advocate for AED and CPR awareness. He has even launched his own campaign, called "3 For Heart."
During his visit to Capitol Hill, Hamlin met with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, who showed his support by donning a custom #3 Bills jersey. The jersey featured a special signed message from Hamlin that read, "Thank you for the love and support." The interaction serves as a testament to the growing awareness of the importance of AED and CPR in saving lives.
During the meeting, Schumer emphasized the significance of the bill and vowed to ensure its passage this year. He emphasized the need to equip people with the appropriate tools and training to save lives, and pointed to Damar Hamlin's recent cardiac arrest as a compelling reason for other politicians to support the bill.
