Patrick Mahomes threw two touchdown passes, and Kansas City's defense stepped up with key stops in the closing moments to secure a 22-17 victory over the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday night, keeping the Chiefs undefeated. Kansas City, the two-time reigning Super Bowl champions, now sits at 3-0, although they haven't been dominant, winning their first three games by a total margin of 13 points.
Despite another interception from Mahomes, the Chiefs managed to hold off Atlanta with some critical defensive plays.
The Falcons, fresh off an upset win over the Philadelphia Eagles, had multiple chances to take the lead late in the game. Kirk Cousins missed two end-zone throws from Kansas City's 6-yard line, and on Atlanta's final drive, rookie running back Bijan Robinson was tackled for a 3-yard loss on fourth-and-1 at the Chiefs' 13-yard line, sealing the win for Kansas City with less than a minute left.
Mahomes passed for 217 yards, connecting on touchdown passes to Rashee Rice and JuJu Smith-Schuster. Harrison Butker added to the Chiefs' scoring with three field goals.
On the other side, Cousins completed 20 of 29 passes for 230 yards, including a 13-yard touchdown pass to Drake London and a 50-yard bomb to tight end Kyle Pitts. That long pass helped set up Robinson's 1-yard touchdown run, but it wasn't enough to topple the Chiefs.
