In a busy day of roster moves in the NFL, the Chicago have released veteran defensive lineman Mario Edwards.
Edwards is the first surprising cut by the Bears ahead of Tuesday's deadline, especially his versatility to play interior or off the edge but, most importantly, considering he has a dead-cap hit of $3.9 million in 2022.
The 2015 second-round pick started 24 of the 30 games he played to begin his career with the Raiders, but injuries and inconsistency led to him being waived ahead of the 2018 season. He landed with the Giants and then the Saints but only had 10.5 sacks and 93 tackles in his first five years in the NFL.
He then signed with the bears in 2020 and appeared in 27 games since then. During that time, he recorded 6 sacks and 25 tackles.
