2024 first-round draft pick QB has been placed as a backup on the depth chart

Earlier this week, NFL teams updated their depth chart for the 2024 season, and many were surprised by the Vikings QB depth chart:
As stated, Vikings 1st-round/10th overall draft pick, JJ McCarthy, is shown as one of the backup QBs behind Sam Darnold.
McCarthy finished his 2023 season at Michigan as the CFB national champion, along with being named as the Big Ten Quarterback of the Year and named as a First-Team All-Big Ten.
So far at training camp, McCarthy has been struggling, worrying both the team and fans. However, Sam Darnold, who was the 3rd-overall pick in 2018, is impressing the team.
Darnold is also a veteran, so maybe the Vikings just want to give McCarthy more time to adjust to the NFL.
