"Bears' Edge Rusher a Potential Cut Candidate to Watch"

The Chicago Bears drafted defensive end Dominique Robinson in the fifth round of the 2022 draft, and after two seasons, his future with the team is uncertain.

Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune, when asked about potential roster changes, highlighted players at risk of being released, noting, «Defensive end Dominique Robinson and wide receiver Velus Jones are ones to watch. The new offensive coaching staff's plans for Jones could be crucial.»

Despite being a former third-round pick, Jones has a better shot at remaining on the team. Robinson, aged 25, participated in 11 games last season, taking part in 155 pass rush attempts. His record of four hurries and one sack, as recorded by Pro Football Focus, may not be enough to secure his position.

Robinson's potential release wouldn't be unexpected. After participating in every game his rookie year, he was sidelined for six games last season as a healthy scratch. His playtime decreased from 51% of defensive snaps in his first year to just 35% last year. Given his reduced role and output, his departure could mirror that of former Bears pass rusher Trevis Gipson.


Previously a quarterback and wide receiver at Miami (OH), Robinson transitioned to the defensive line in his senior year and is still adapting to his role as a pass rusher. His future with the Bears remains up in the air.

The team is likely to seek additional edge rushers through the draft or free agency to bolster their defense, which, despite improvements, still ranked 31st in sacks last season. With Dominique Robinson and DeMarcus Walker as the primary edge rushers and a need for more robust defensive line options, cutting Robinson might lead to significant roster adjustments.

Coach Matt Ebeflus emphasized the importance of strengthening the pass rush, stating, «It's a key priority. We need effective players opposite Montez Sweat to significantly impact the game.»
