Gruden's lawyer: Roger Goodell's testimony shows still resisting actual accountability

JON GRUDEN'S LAWYER: ROGER GOODELL'S TESTIMONY SHOWS NFL IS STILL RESISTING ACTUAL ACCOUNTABILITY

JUN 22, 2022  (14H28)      V. CARBONNEAU
Jon Gruden is suing the NFL over the leaked emails that led to his resignation as Raiders coach last October. This committee's investigation began days later.

Many were watching thoughtfully Commissioner Roger Goodell's testimony before Congress. The lawyers who represent former Raiders head coach Jon Gruden had a lot to say about his testimony.

«It was apparent from Commissioner Goodell's testimony today that the NFL is still resisting actual accountability and is only willing to be selectively transparent,» attorney Adam Hosmer-Henner said in a statement issued Wednesday. «In the Jon Gruden lawsuit, the Nevada court comprehensively rejected the NFL and Commissioner Goodell's attempt to compel arbitration and conceal their conduct from the public. If they do appeal, we welcome the opportunity for the Nevada Supreme Court to issue a published opinion confirming the ruling and invalidating the NFL Constitution and the unfair arbitration provisions that the NFL has hidden behind for so long. Jon Gruden's fight matters to many more people than just himself and real accountability won't exist until the NFL's misconduct stops being addressed behind closed doors.»

Thus, barring a settlement, Gruden's case may take a while to resolve. Vic Tafur of TheAthletic.com recently reported that Gruden may not be inclined to settle.

«People close to Gruden think that he might want to have his day in court,» Tafur writes. «He has plenty of money from his broadcasting, Raiders and sponsorship deals and may value putting Goodell on trial more than any dollar figure.»

Mike Florio reported that even if Gruden were inclined to settle, the league presumably wouldn't consider it until it knows that the case can't be forced into the NFL's secret, rigged kangaroo court. At that point, the NFL should be willing to make a major offer to Gruden in order to avoid detailed discovery efforts regarding the question of who weaponized the Gruden emails with the apparent goal of forcing him out.
