The bears have an excellent player in CB Jaylon Johnson. He is, in my mind, one of the most underrated players at his position and I fully expect him to take his game to the next level under new HC Matt Eberflus. He believes that his past work should not guarantee him anything.
"I mean, that's my mindset now moving forward—it's a complete reset," Johnson said on Tuesday's second day of OTAs. "Everything I've done in the past with the other coaches, with the other staff, I mean, it really doesn't mean anything too much.
"I mean, the film is not going to lie to you. But at the end of the day, they want me to show them what I can do in person moving forward."
I like that mindset a lot. Everything is earned, not given.
When asked about his new rookie secondary running mates, Jonhson had an amusing response:
"I'd throw 'em in the fire if you are asking me. I mean, they're our first two draft picks."
-Jaylon Johnson on Bears rookie cornerback Kyler Gordon and safety Jaquan Brisker
I agree with that 100%. I get that, in some cases, a rookie can benefit from sitting behind proven veterans, especially when you are talking about young quarterbacks. However, this is not the case. Both Gordon and Brisker are NFL-ready. Of course, you will definitely see some "Welcome to the NFL" moments, but I believe they will be able to play at a very high level as soon as year 1!
