Breaking Down the Offensive Performance Against the Seahawks

Just like that, the Bears played their 2nd preseason game of the 2022 NFL season with a 27-11 victory over the Seattle Seahawks. The team's progress while being on a short week was evident as the overall team performance was fantastic.

The Offense came together and put on a disciplined, focused performance against the Seahawks in Thursday night's contest. Justin Fields played a single drive and while the offensive line looked quite shaky on said drive, Fields went 5 of 7 for 39 yards leading to a field goal. One of the bright spots on the first drive was Cole Kmet's production. The third-year tight end put up 2 catches for 31 yards with one being a big 19-yard catch that came from a Justin Fields roll out which helped set up the field goal. Fields was rolled out multiple times on his lone drive which was nice to see, as it seems like Getsy is focused on using his quarterback's strengths.

2nd string quarterback Trevor Siemian came in and played multiple drives. He ended 8/15 for 48 yards. One of the very few offensive mistakes occurred when Siemian made a circus throw on a third down that appeared to be caught but was ruled incomplete by the officials. Eberflus chose not to throw the challenge flag and after taking a delay of game, punted the ball. While there is no guarantee the play would have been overturned, it would have been nice to see coach throw the flag and potentially get the first down. Hopefully, as the preseason goes on, communication with the staff upstairs can continue to be ironed out and situations like this can be improved moving forward. Nathan Peterman finished the majority of the second half going 8-14 for 85 yards, managing the game. The offense has still yet to turn the ball over this preseason which is extremely encouraging.

Rookie WR Velus Jones made his preseason debut and had a catch for 4 yards while also having a massive 48-yard punt return. Rookie Tristan Ebner also had another positive showing by running for 29 yards on 9 carries. As the game progressed, the offensive line settled in and protected fairly well. Teven Jenkins at right guard seemed to be a productive change as well. The Bears only gave up 2 total sacks compared to the 5 previously given up against the Chiefs.


One of the biggest issues with the past regime was a lack of discipline when it came to penalties. Against Seattle, the Bears only had 3 penalties for 38 yards whereas Seattle had 13 penalties for 92 yards. Guys were appearing to understand assignments, play hard, and remain focused throughout the entire game which is crucial to being a successful team in this league. While the Bears obtained 20 total first downs during the game, third down efficiency was not good enough at 25%. This is an area that must improve prior to the regular season.

The Bears have extra time to prepare and get better before visiting the Cleveland Browns next Saturday in their final preseason game of the 2022 season.
