The Bears have a stud at the running back position in David Montgomery. This is nothing new. Indeed, Bears fans have been blessed with so many great running backs in their history.

Montgomery has been a very solid running back ever since he was drafted in 2019. In his rookie year, he was splitting time with fellow RB Tarik Cohen. Overall, Montgomery finished his rookie season with 889 rushing yards and six rushing touchdowns. Montgomery became the team's featured running back heading into the 2020 season. Before the regular season began, head coach Matt Nagy emphasized the offense would prioritize establishing a run game. In 2020, he finished the 2020 regular season with 247 rushes for 1,070 yards and eight touchdowns. His 1,070 rushing yards ranked fifth in the NFL. He also caught 54 passes for 438 yards and two touchdowns. He was on pace to put up the same kind of numbers in 2021, but he was slowed down by an injury. He finished with 849 rushing yards and 7 touchdowns in 13 games.

However, he is in the last year of his contract. As we all know, giving a long-term deal to a running back can be very risky. One might even say that it's never a great move. Well, a few experts believe this is the case for Montgomery.

Here is what Jacob Infante said on his subject:

I really like David Montgomery, and I think he deserves a nice second contract next offseason.

I just don't think the team that pays him will be the Bears. He's not as good of a fit in the new scheme, and I doubt the new regime pays top dollar for an RB.

This will be a very interesting subject to follow as this year goes along...
